Build a Solar Business That Pays You ProperlyYou have the accreditation and the crew. What you need now is the margin, the systems and your weekends back.

This is for the owner of a solar business in Australia or New Zealand. You hold the accreditation, you quote the jobs and you still carry the paperwork, the STC claims and the callbacks. Here is how to build a business that holds its margin without you on every roof.

The week this is about

Running A Solar Business Looks Like This.

You are quoting at 11pm after a full day on the roof

The crew knocks off at four and you start the second shift: proposals, the DNSP connection application that has to be lodged before work starts, and the STC paperwork from Tuesday's job. The quote the customer wanted this morning goes out at midnight.

Every lead you buy costs more and closes less

You are paying comparison-site prices for exclusive residential leads, then sitting third in a stack of quotes where the only question anyone asks is price per watt. So you shave the price to win the job, and the margin walks out of the door with it.

A callback from a job you did three years ago

The inverter drops out on a system you installed three years ago, the customer rings you and not the manufacturer, and you send a van across town for nothing. Every one of those trips comes straight out of a job you already priced too thin.

Stay on that road and you are running a bigger business every year for the same money, with more warranty exposure, more compliance and less of your own life in it.

Questions

Solar Installers Ask Us These.

Do I still need Clean Energy Council accreditation to install solar?
No. Since 2024 the accreditation scheme for rebate-eligible installs has been run by Solar Accreditation Australia, appointed by the Clean Energy Regulator, and accredited installers must earn 100 CPD points every 12 months. Keeping that current is admin, not strategy. What we train owners on is everything the accreditation does not cover: pricing, systems, marketing and building a crew.
How do I stop competing on price per watt?
You change what the quote is about. Price per watt only wins when nothing else on the page is different, so build a quote that names the standards you install to, the warranty process, the grid connection work you handle and who answers the phone in year five. The Profitable Pricing Masterclass walks owners through that build.
Is this useful if I run a solar business in New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealand has no STC scheme, and registration sits with the Electrical Workers Registration Board plus the Mains Parallel Generation endorsement introduced in July 2024, so the compliance detail differs. The business problems do not. Pricing, hiring, systems and lead generation work the same way, and the Tradies App is free for trade business owners in Australia and New Zealand.
I am flat out installing. When would I actually do the training?
Around the work. The Learning Hub sits in the Tradies App at $199 a month, so lessons happen in the ute between jobs or on a Sunday morning. Business Foundations runs live weekly with Greg Allan, and Tradie Teams puts you in a small group of owners. Start free on the app and add what you need.
