The Plumbing Business That Runs Without YouYou got licensed to build something, not to be under a house at 11pm quoting from the ute.
This is for plumbing business owners in Australia and New Zealand who are still on the tools, still doing the quotes at night, and still carrying every callout. It covers the money, the systems, the pricing and the team that turn a busy plumbing business into one you own.

The week this is about
Running A Plumbing Business Looks Like This.
The after-hours phone never stops being yours
A hot water unit fails on a Sunday night and the phone rings on your bedside table, not anyone else's. You go, because the customer is yours and the reputation is yours. Then you are back on site at seven the next morning.
Your money is sitting in someone else's account
The rough-in was signed off six weeks ago. The progress claim went in, the builder went quiet, and the retention on last year's job is still unpaid. Meanwhile the merchant account is due on the twentieth and the apprentice gets paid on Thursday.
Compliance paperwork eats every Sunday
Compliance certificates, notifiable work forms, backflow test reports and the TPAR deadline all land on the same kitchen table, usually after dinner. None of it is billable, all of it is your licence, and none of it can be done by anyone else yet.
Another year of this and you will still be the only person who can quote, sign off and answer the phone, with more turnover and no more of your life back.

Worth knowing
Two Things Every Plumber Running A Business Should Know.
Minimum rates under the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award (MA000036) rose 4.75% from 1 July 2026, and they lift again every 1 July whether or not your prices do.
In Victoria, plumbing work over $750 needs a compliance certificate lodged within five days, and since 1 July 2025 the regulator is the Building and Plumbing Commission, not the VBA.
