Tiler Business HiringYou cannot take on more work, because there is only one pair of hands that does it right.

The week this is about

Sound Like Your Tiling Business?

Every wall still has to be set out by you

You can hand over a floor. You cannot hand over the set out, the falls or the wet area, so you are still on every job. Growth stops at whatever one tiler can physically lay in a week.

Scared an apprentice costs more than they make

First year, they are slow, they break tiles and they need watching. You have heard the award rates and the training obligations, and you have no idea whether the wage subsidies actually cover any of it. So you keep doing it all yourself.

Paying tilers on an ABN and hoping it is fine

It is easier to pay a bloke on his own ABN than to run wages, super and workers compensation. You have also heard the words sham contracting, and you know that if the arrangement is really employment, the bill lands on you.

Stay a one man tiling business and your income has a hard ceiling, set by how many square metres your own knees can lay before they give out.

Hiring and team

Here Is What We Do About It.

Hiring, team and leadership training in the Learning Hub covers the whole thing: which hire to make first, what the award actually requires, how to induct someone onto a tiling job, and how to hand over a set out without losing quality. Tradie Teams and Freedom Fighter 1:1 keep you honest while you do it.

How it works

Three Steps, Starting Tonight.

Step 1

Hire before you are desperate

Every bad hire in this industry happens in the same week: the week you were already too busy. The training covers hiring on a plan instead of on a panic.

Step 2

Give them a system to follow

People do not fail because they are lazy. They fail because nobody wrote down what good looks like. That is why systems and hiring are the same problem.

Step 3

Lead them, then get off the tools

The coaching goes into the bit that is genuinely hard: running a team when you were trained as a tradesperson, and letting go of work you can do faster yourself.

Questions

Tiler Business Hiring, Answered.

What award covers tilers and what do I have to pay?
Tile layers are covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award, MA000020. It sets minimum rates by classification, apprentice percentages by year, and a set of allowances that catch employers out. Fair Work publishes the current pay guide each year. Our hiring training shows you how to build that cost into your rate before you hire.
Can I pay a tiler on an ABN instead of putting them on wages?
Only if the arrangement is genuinely a contract, not employment wearing an ABN. Sham contracting is a live issue across construction, and the penalties and back pay land on the business, not the worker. Get the test right before you decide. The hiring training and your coach will work through your specific situation with you.
Are there incentives for taking on a tiling apprentice?
Yes. business.gov.au lists apprenticeship wage subsidies and hiring incentives, and the housing sector Key Apprenticeship Program pays employers up to $10,000. That changes the maths on a first year apprentice considerably. Our training helps you work out whether the apprentice pays for themselves once the incentive and their output are both counted.
