The owner's job

What the business actually needs from you, why going back on the tools costs more than it saves, and how to run your own week.

The hardest role to define in a trade business is the owner's, because it is the one nobody writes a job description for. It also changes: the work that built the business to where it is will not take it further, and carrying on doing it is the most common way growth stops.

Going back on the tools is the clearest version of that. It feels productive and it is, for that day. What it stops is quoting, following up and marketing, and because the consequence lands weeks later as a quiet patch, the cause is rarely connected to the effect. The same pattern shows up after a business finally starts running itself: the pressure comes off, the owner quietly stops doing sales and marketing, and a profitable business flatlines without anyone deciding it should.

These lessons work on the three things that hold that line. A clear purpose and an owner's mindset rather than a tradesperson's, which is what makes the hard calls survivable. A plan that starts from the life you want in three, five or ten years and works backwards to the business, rather than the other way round. And the ordinary weekly discipline underneath both: your calendar running your day rather than your inbox, three tasks that genuinely must be finished, and deadlines on the small things too.
