Marketing and getting leads
Who you are actually talking to, which channels suit which jobs, and the referral networks that outperform all of it.

Marketing for a trade business goes wrong in the same place almost every time: the owner is marketing to everyone, so the message is written for nobody. Defining the customer is not a branding exercise, it decides the channel, the offer and the words.
The stronger way to build that definition is around what the customer is trying to get done, and what they gain or lose in the process, rather than around age and income. It matters because the path to hiring you differs by job. A burst pipe goes straight from problem to phone call, which is high-intent search and nothing else. A planned renovation runs for weeks across research and comparison, and a channel built for emergencies will miss it entirely. Australians overwhelmingly start that search on Google and typically contact more than one business, so being findable at the moment of intent is not optional.
The counterweight to all of that is the referral network, which several of these lessons argue outperforms paid channels on both cost and conversion, because the client arrives already vouched for by someone they trust. Building one is unglamorous: list the non-competing tradies you already know, start conversations, and pass work before you expect any back. The same logic runs through email to past clients, where the trust already exists and the only real rule is not to sell in every message.
