Roofer Business PricingYou are the busiest roofer in town and the bank balance has never once shown it.

Pricing for roofing business owners: what to actually charge per square metre, per hour and per job so the price covers award wages, scaffold, insurance and a margin. This page is for the owner still pricing off what the last bloke charged.

The week this is about

Sound Like Your Roofing Business?

Priced per square metre off someone else's guide

You searched what roofers charge per square metre, found a range built for homeowners, and landed somewhere in the middle. That number has never once been checked against your award wages, your scaffold hire or your dead weather days.

Scaffold hire quietly eats the job

You quoted the roof, then the scaffold went up for a fortnight because the weather turned and the sheets were late. The hire keeps running whether you are on the tin or not, and it comes out of the same fixed price.

You find the real cost after you strip the roof

The quote assumed sound battens. Once the tiles come off you find rot, three layers of old membrane and a box gutter that has to be rebuilt. You either eat it or have an awkward conversation, and you usually eat it.

Working every daylight hour of a hot summer, carrying all the risk on every roof, and finding out in October that the year barely paid you a wage.

Pricing and profit

Here Is What We Do About It.

The Profitable Pricing Masterclass shows you how to build a charge-out rate from your own costs up: award wages, scaffold, insurance, vehicles, dead weather days and the hours you spend quoting. The Profit & Freedom Masterclass covers what the margin is for, and coaching holds the price when the customer pushes.

Charge-out rate calculator

Put in what labour costs you, how many hours you can actually invoice and what the business spends, and it builds the rate that covers all of it and leaves a margin. It runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Work out your rate

How it works

Three Steps, Starting Tonight.

Step 1

Work out what an hour really costs you

Not the wage. The wage plus the ute, the insurance, the phone, the unbilled hours and the time you spend quoting. Most owners have never put that number on paper.

Step 2

Price off the number, not off the last bloke

The Profitable Pricing Masterclass takes you through building a rate that carries your overheads and a margin, so you stop pricing against whoever is cheapest this month.

Step 3

Hold the price and watch what happens

The Profit and Freedom Masterclass covers the part nobody warns you about: what to do when someone pushes back, and why losing the wrong job is a win.

Questions

Roofer Business Pricing, Answered.

What should a roofer charge per hour in Australia?
There is no right number to copy, and that is why so many roofers are busy and broke. Your rate has to carry the award wage you legally pay, superannuation, insurance including height cover, scaffold, the ute, quoting time and the days rain takes off you. Build it from your own costs, then compare.
How do I stop losing money when I open up a roof and find damage?
By pricing the unknown instead of hoping. That means a written scope of what the quote includes, a stated rate for rotten battens, extra layers and box gutter repairs, and a variation process the customer signs before you carry on. Set it up once and every roof after it is protected.
Do I have to charge more than the roofer quoting under me?
Usually yes, and you have to be able to say why. Your price carries award-compliant wages, proper height insurance, scaffold and a SWMS, and theirs may not. Pricing training and coaching give you the words for that conversation, so the customer buys the job done properly rather than the cheapest number.
