How do I systematise design without losing the custom touch?
You don't remove customisation - you systematise the *process* of customisation. Document your design principles: approved fonts (limit to five), spacing rules (e.g., 15mm clearance around logo), colour palette (limit to eight). Junior designers follow the framework; customers get consistency, not assembly-line work. You review final designs before production.
What if my junior designer doesn't understand the brand?
Brand understanding comes from immersion, not magic. Assign them ten jobs with heavy review. After ten jobs, they'll have internalised your standard. Create a design brief template they fill for every job: client objectives, audience, tone, practical constraints. The template forces the thinking.
How do I price vehicle wraps versus shopfront signage fairly?
Track actual labour hours for each job type for two months. Record: design time, material prep time, installation time, rework time. Calculate total labour cost per job type. Add material cost. Add 40% for overhead and profit. That's your baseline price. Test it; adjust if you're under 40% margin.
How do I ensure installers work consistently?
Document the installation process for each job type: surface prep (time, tools), measuring and marking (time, tools), application technique (step-by-step), sealing and finishing (time, tools). Walk through the process with each installer on their first two jobs. Film them doing it correctly. New installers watch the film before their first job.
What if a customer rejects a design?
Rejection usually means the design brief was incomplete. On the next job, ask deeper questions: What does success look like? Who is your audience? What emotion do you want them to feel? What action do you want them to take? Better briefs mean fewer rejections. You revise the process, not the designer.
How do I handle rush jobs without blowing my lead times?
Rush jobs are premium pricing. Standard lead time is five days at standard rate. Rush (two-day turnaround) is standard rate plus 50%. Emergency (next day) is standard rate plus 100%. Installers get paid bonuses for rush jobs. This protects your timeline and rewards the team.
Can I outsource design if I'm not ready to hire?
Yes - but only after you've systematised your process. Once you have design principles, templates, and brief formats, you can brief a freelance designer clearly. Without the system, they'll ask endless questions. Build the system first; then outsourcing is straightforward.
